The decor of the hotel was lovely and a welcome drink of hibiscus was a nice touch.
The walls are very thin and so you can hear everything! The stairs are very narrow and so not very family friendly. The breakfast was limited to one drink each and food options were egg, toast and fruit. We also had an issue with payment as we counted out the money handed it to the staff lady and suddenly we were short by 50,000.

I had a wonderful stay at the Emerald Palm. Staff was so gracious and helpful. Rashid, the manager, took time to show me around the immediate area of Stonetown. As a solo traveler I felt welcomed and safe. The room is nicely decorated and sparkling clean. My luggage was brought to my room and when I left my jacket behind, Rashid was quick to be sure I got it back. Breakfast was delicious and less than 10 feet away at a restaurant where I also had a couple of dinners because the food was so good.

The staff were fantastic; approachable, friendly and genuinely compassionate.
The building is old and very traditional and 'authentic-looking', I personally loved this as it made it feel very cosy and like home.
The staff helped me with my suitcase to get it up to my room. My room opened out onto a terrace which had a lot of plants and a bench which i loved.
The room was really clean, had good Wi-Fi, and all the basics I needed: kettle, teas, robe etc. They took good care to prevent mosquitoes.
It is located in a small alley in the heart of Stone Town which means cars cannot get to the front. But it is right by the old fort and not even a mins walk from car access.
As a solo female traveller, my main concern is always safety, but i felt really safe here as there is always someone at the desk, and the hotel is so close to the main areas so i dont have to walk for ages during the night.
Overall I had a great experience! :)

My deluxe single room was supposed to have a sofa, soundproofing, closet, and bathrobe. Actually, it was a small, shabby room with none of these. The worst problem, though, was lack of enough lighting to read. The wall mounted light in the bedroom had only one very dim bulb, and there was no nightstand or lamp. Plaster repair and repainting are badly needed. Unless one is super careful, water from the shower escapes and covers the entire bathroom floor. A shower curtain is needed. Also a bathroom door instead of a curtain.

The room was absolutely wonderful—if you’re looking for a prison cell from the last century.
It had no windows, no air conditioning (I didn’t ask for one but I didn’t know that there was no windows or fresh air) and the wardrobe was nothing more than a worn-out wooden box with no shelves.
Room service was extremely poor: no towel changes or even a single bottle of water for two days.
Yes, the hotel is a hundred years old, but that’s no excuse for using such dilapidated furniture.
The mattress was hard, though perfectly fitting for a cell rather than a hotel room.

Great value. I seemed to have been upgraded to the “penthouse” level room as I was here for one night only, which was lovely and on the rooftop with a patio in front and nice views. Really liked the decoration and use of vintage and antique items and furniture throughout, made the house seemed unique and not cookie cutter. We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel. The breakfast was good, and the girls had a lot of fun unlocking our room door with the large padlock—it kept them entertained! Having a generator was a real plus, especially since power outages are common on the island. The manager was incredibly helpful, even walking with us to one of our tour pick-up points. The area around the hotel feels safe, and there are plenty of local shops and restaurants to explore nearby.
The Wi-Fi was poor, which I assumed is fairly typical across most properties in Stone Town.

Some of the reception stuff was kind.
We have not received the room we booked as they overbooked and forgot that they have an account in booking.com. They provided us with other type room and did not manage to solve this problem during our stay, lied that we will be moved to the better room next day, nor provided us with refund that we could move to other hotel. Even lied to booking.com service providers support people about the situation.
We tried to talk with the manager of the property from INDIA but he was not willing to solve it and kept INSULTING us, got angry that we claimed this situation to booking.com and kept shouting to us by phone by saying “take it or leave it”, “i will not refund anything”, “you don’t understand with your tiny brane”, ““fu** off” and so on and finally he hanged up. We do not think that it is a proper communication and such behavior should not be allowed on booking.com. The local supervising manager can only say SORRY SORRY for his manager and the situation as apparently we acknowledge that he does not speak any English.
The room we got did not match the picture, but according to the property manager, he does not need to show exact picture in booking.com so be AVARE. Also that in the booking.com page the property manager gives WRONG information: the room did not have minibar, did not have fan, it is was not carpeted, did not have sofa, wardrobe or closet, clothes rack, definitely not soundproof, as there was so much noise during the night from the club nearby and from the old airconditioning that was impossible to sleep.
Location is good, but does not have enough signboards and the entrance is in narrow dark alley. The reception is only a desk in the lobby which will give you the vibe of cheap and unsafe place.
The room provided with glass jar of water which does not seem drinkable and clean.
The breakfast is served in Indian restaurant nearby and is very poor and the staff is very unfriendly.
