Since people arrive very early and only one night most of the time, it happened to me several times that they threw my bottle of water or other things. plus one morning they allowed a chak in at 6.30 in the morning, THIS WAS ABSOLUTELY DISRESPECTFUL.

The communal bathroom and kitchen weren't modern but very clean.
Fantastic location in the centre of stone town, easy walking distance of lots of sights and the ferry to prison island etc.
WiFi had great coverage too!
It was quite noisy at night. Obviously not something the hostel can help in the slightest but be aware of it if you're planning to stay. It quietened down around midnight and I slept fine.
The stairs are incredibly steep! The staff will help you with your bags and I didn't mind but it's something to be aware of especially if you have any mobility issues.

It was a convenient location to walk around stone town. Shower water was good and hot. Good value. AC in the bedrooms was nice. Very friendly people staying there when I was there but of course that could be hit or miss. The lady working there at the reception desk with a short hair was very nice and helpful but the one with long hair was not particularly friendly and seemed a bit disinterested in helping the guests.
No luggage locker. Only a tiny drawer which would fit a passport and a wallet and some keys...way to small for a laptop. No privacy curtains on the bed. Mattress is too thin and hurts if you lay on your side. Wifi was slow...1-5Mbps even sitting right next to the router. I asked for a lower bunk bed and they didn't give me one. The Maasai man said only the top ones were available. Then later that day I met another guest who was staying in another room and he was the only one in a room of 8 beds so I could have had a lower bunk. The next day I went to change it and the lady with long hair really didn't seem to want to let me move to a lower bed for some reason even though there were at least four lower beds available in two different rooms. I did eventually convince her to let me move to a lower bed.

Excellent place for a budget stay for a night before a flight. Perfectly located in the hystorical charming pedestrian city center and there is no car traffic, so it is always quiet around. For traveller convenience, there are activities and taxi available to book directly in the hotel for a good price. The room and bed is clean and comfortable. Personell is friendly and caring.

Great location in the center of stone town. The room was clean and a comfortable size with ac and towels. Friendly staff and bathroom and kitchen do the job. Also nice that there was a watercooler available so we refilled our bottles. The staff were also nice to let us leave our bags in the reception after checkout whilst we explored the city for a bit! I would recommend this place if you are going for short term in between arrival to stone town or heading to a different area, definitely not a luxurious stay but does the job if you are quickly exploring and need a convenient place. Also cute decor and seems like it brings together like minded explorers :)
Not a big deal but it would be important to know that the steps are extremely steep - so definitely not disable friendly. The bathroom was okay - does the job but perhaps could have been cleaner and smell nicer. The sewage alley is what our bedroom was looking at so the smell would not be so good and we could hear our neighbours quite loudly.

We spent 3 nights at the hostel in a family room so we had space. It is really well situated in the center of the old town. Showers were quite clean for a hostel. Breakfast at the Shoki Shoki House was really good.
The staff is not welcoming, almost bothered by our arrival. The kitchen facilities are not really clean.
Can be really noisy at some point, because of the location. Not a good value for the price.

Good location, staff is very friendly and let us store our luggage during the day and use the communal space for a couple of hours before we left for the airport. We really appreciated the fact that we had an air-conditioning in the room - it makes all the difference! It was also nice that they offer great breakfast for a reasonable price in the main Shoki Shoki hotel building. Overall it was exactly what we needed for 1 night in Stone Town.
Stairs were very steep which made it a bit uncomfortable carrying all our luggage to the room (but you can ask for help). The room was quite small and dark, and overall the place wasn't the cleanest.

They have water available for guest. The water tank has 2 options, 1 was icy cold, which was great in the Zanzibar heat, and the other was boiling hot, which I loved because I could use it for tea.
The staff help with your bags, which is amazing and needed considering how steep the stairs are.

It was very nicely located in the heart of the old town by Jaws Corner. The staff were friendly and I was able to check out before office hours. The room and facilities were clean and comfortable. It’s great if you’re looking for a simple place to sleep in the centre of the old town.
There is no common area to hang out in so it is just your room and the shared toilet/showers. It can be a bit noisy at weird hours of the night/morning. If you have mobility issues, the stairs are very steep - the staff will help with your bags, but you still need to be comfortable going up/down them.

My two teenage children and I had the family room at the top of two very steep but short staircases. The large room was very clean and had a bunk bed and a queen as well. Both were very comfortable. There is a table with chairs, side tables and lots of shelves for laying out clothes and things. They provided glass bottles of water that could be filled from the dispenser in the hall. So nice to not have plastic water bottles. The location is right in the old town and the sounds of streets can be heard as well as the church bells and call to prayer. Even though the booking information it was mentioned that I would be staying at the guest house not the hotel with the same name I ended up at the wrong one. Staff was helpful in directing us to the right place which was a 4 minute walk away. I edited this post to add that breakfast is plentiful and delicious with great coffee. It is however located back in the other hotel a short walk away.
It would be even better if there were a kettle and tea/coffee, kleenex, hand towels, phone to call down, safe deposit box, side lamps, separate shower. In the center of the room is an AC and a ceiling fan but the room remained warm most of the day. It did become better in the night and we could sleep well.
