Great breakfast on the roof terrace. Lots of choice and friendly waiter. Beautiful building and decoration. Special decoration in our room and bottle of wine for our honeymoon.
Mattress on the hard side. The floor and painting in the room is getting old, doesn't look well maintained, it's a shame. The shower head had stained of limestone. On the second and last evening, there was almost no hot water anymore (we didn't tell the employees as it was still ok for a quick rinse).

The hotel building itself is a work of art. Our room was spacious, luxurious and unique: hand crafted furniture, Arabic lamps, the most comfortable bed ever.. The breakfast was served on a beautiful terrace overlooking the Old Fort and the ocean.. Fresh fruit and Zanzibari coffee everyday!

If the hotel provided better customer service, it would be great. The location is ideal, the breakfast is good, and the rooms and dcor are nice.
I am nearly certain someone stole items from my room while I was not there. When we checked out, I was missing over $200 and my Apple earbuds, both of which I kept in a bag I did not use during my stay. When brought to the attention of staff and management, I got no response - just a reminder that the hotel is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Multiple attempts to contact the hotel after went without a substantive response.

Stay away from the hotel. The bad far outweighs the good. It may have been nice in its glory days. Breakfast was acceptable. Although the coffee is the worst in Zanzibar. The view from the rooftop is nice. Location in stone town is very central.
When you arrive you are given a paper to sign that you will not prosecute any theft occuring on the property. This already sets the mood for the stay, and puts you at odds with the hotel. Odds that are duly rewarded. I am not making any accusations here, as there is hard to provide any proof of theft. But do yourself a favour and don't leave any valuables at the place. Look at some other recent reviews for confirmation. Other issues. We were asked to pay on arrival in cash. There is no Spa in this hotel, just a bath tub. The view consists of a view of the surrounding walls.

The building was fantastic, looked great and authentic. Perfectly situated in the centre of Stonetown. Breakfast was good and having it on the roof top terrace was even better. However, let down by the possible thieving going on.
Okay so, once we arrived we read some reviews on trip advisor. It turns out there may be some dodgy dealings going on.
When we arrived we were made to sign a document stating that all of our valuables, jewels, money etc be kept in the safe and if this goes missing the hotel is not at vault. Having just arrived and excited we thought nothing of it and signed away.
Once we were shown to the room the member of staff asked us to put all of our money and valuables in the safe.
This made us feel uneasy our whole stay and meant we had to carry our valuables with us the entire time. Following the reading of reviews we decided to test this theory. I packed my bag a certain way and placed one dollar in the safe. When we returned my bag had been moved about and clearly unpacked. The dollar in the safe was in a completely different location to where I put it. Our room had also been cleaned twice in the one day which seemed odd. Booking.com should follow this up and make sure people are not being robbed. Check trip advisor for similar experiences.

The bathroom in our room was terrible, bath/shower was blocked the whole 2 days, made a gurgling noise, it wasnt a spa you had to go to a funny place around the corner. Staff were helpful but it was about making extra money off us and not supporting us.

After checking with the manager (it took him 15 min), he said it was fine to pay what we originally booked on booking.com. However they still charged us 5% more because we paid by card. Not a nice start, not a nice welcome!
- STAFF - very unkind, we changed 4 hotels in Zanzibar this had the worst staff.
- NOT CLEAN - this hotel is very beautiful but its not clean. the following was dirty: pillow cases, bedsheets, sink in the bathroom.
- RIPPED bedsheets and towels!!!!!!! - this is not nice to get in a hotel

We stayed for 2 nights in the Mercury room. The room had insects and mosquitos. Bed sheets, covers, towels, they all had red spots and dirt marks on them. Breakfast was inadequate. There was hardly anything to eat besides fruits and eggs. Wifi was nonexistent throughout the hotel. There were some spots in the lobby where you could find moments of semi-stable internet connectivity and thats it.

The room and hotel are not in great shape. Broken button on the toilet and other maintenance issues. Everything is a bit dated and not taken care of. Breakfast was basic. The bed is really hard (and I like a firm bed normally). The first sheets had some stains, the second night they were clean.
There is no longer a spa in the hotel.
Feels like the hotel is coasting on its reputation. Not good value for money.

unfortunately, Wi-Fi signal was almost non-existent in the room or on the roof terrace. As I had planned to work and was depending on wi-fi, this was very disappointing. Apparently there is a coffee house next door with strong wi-fi.
The room was beautiful but, as mentioned by other reviewers, the mattress was not the most comfortable.
There was a strong odor in the bathroom (maybe coming from the drain??) which, in fairness, I did not mention to the staff. I had only booked one nighthad I booked a longer stay, I definitely would have mentioned.

We had a terrible time with this booking. Despite having our booking confirmed on booking.com and an email from the hotel saying they were looking forward to our stay a couple of weeks before we arrived they pretended when we arrived that they did not have our booking. There was a festival happening in Stone Town that weekend and we believe they gave our rooms away because they were offered more money for them. They sent us to their sister hotel which was a 3 star instead of a 4 star, the walls were paper thin, the facilities not great and we were not in the part of town we wanted to be in.
Everything was awful, hotel did not look great, despite us not making it past reception, staff were unhelpful and rude- they gave our rooms away and we were sent to their sister hotel.

So this place is listed as 4 star hotel, it is far from that. Maybe a 2 star.
1-Most important problem there is no wifi in the room which is a huge issue, not possible torwlax and plan your holiday or whatever, ypu have to go outside the room where it is warm and fullof mosquitoes.
2- The breakfast was not good at all, there was no buffet because they said it is low season, but even the ala carte was not freah, the eaiters were not properly attending and they were on their phones.
3- The check out time is 10am. Even large 5 star resorts donot have check out before 12.

This is the best hotel I experienced in Zanzibar (Im here for 1+ year and traveled the whole island) and maybe even in the world!
The vibes are immaculate, the rooms and property are at the highest standards of quality and modernity while still keeping the historic aesthetic.. we loved our Executive Suite- for our anniversary they offered an extra special room!
The building is an almost 200 years old house and the location is in the middle of stone town- you have access to anything you need 24/7 (coffee shops, souvenir shops, forodhani food market at night.. )
The room has the best bed, the bathtub in the bedroom is amazing, the hot water and pressure are dreamy! They make sure that all details are in place: thick towels, toiletries and coffee, light canceling windows.
Staff is very nice and accommodating, breakfast was tasty and its the most welcoming environment!
The only little problem we had in the building was noise- if you are a light sleeper you might have issues with the street noise until 1-2am and breakfast noise from 7am
We are deep sleeper though and we slept like babies in the amazing hotel!

The staff was courteous, always friendly and helpful. The Location is perfect to discover stonetown, It is located directly in the center, short walking distance to almost every tourist attraction, but the room itself was quiet and dark and we could sleep very well. The rooftop where we had breakfast has a wonderful view, the breakfast by the way was amazing.
the doors and entrances are authentic zanzibari but very low and small, so you have to pay a lot of attention not to bang your head if you are a tall person. The cleanliness of the bathroom could be improved, also the fittings in the bathroom were very old and sometimes broken.

Great central location and lots of attractions, restaurants/bars and the beach within walking distance. The hotel and room interiors were really cozy, rooms are spacious, and staff was friendly.
It was really noisy past midnight as the hotel is located in a busy street which made it difficult to sleep, and noisy very early morning as well. You can also hear everything going on outside your room - people, staff, cleaning etc.
My bed wasn't clean (dirt spots) which I only noticed when I was going to sleep past midnight, so I decided to spread out towels to sleep on - and the bed wasn't super comfortable.
The room was too dark for my liking (not a lot of light) but the design of the room was really cool.
Toilet doesn't have a door which is not ideal for friends /couples who want to share a room, and the shower is literally in the bedroom too.
Hot water stayed hot for 5 mins only and then went ice cold while I was showering.
Overall though, the location was good, price was reasonable, and the hotel is pretty cool. I didn't raise complaints about any of the above as I was only staying for 1 night and couldn't be bothered.

It is a typical house in Stone Town which gives a great cultural context. The staff was great, prepared us a packed breakfast since our flight was very early. Also provided an airport transfer. It is very easy to access and great to support visiting Stone Town.
The room feels a bit heavy and carpets and textiles over the bed feel a bit old. To lock the door from the inside is tricky. There was a lot of noise outside until 11 pm and then a very loud sound from the mosque at 5 am.

Very good location. The building it self is exceptional. The staff are friendly and reliable, as long as your are in the hotel. Breakfast is very good. The restaurant is spectacular with its 360 view, and we tried their Bohra menu which is sensational.
Room was outdated. Toilet seat cover was broken, all taps had scale build up, towel rail was rusty and broken, giving a feeling of uncleanness. Toilet did not had a door!!! and bathtub/shower was part of the room. In general the room had a feeling of an adult hotel room. Finally, the hotel offers some excursions, which I tried to book before my arrival, no matter the reminders I've send them, I had no response back.

Breakfast location overlooking the town was lovely and the staff were keen to please and accommodate our needs. The rooms were quite ornate but we liked the cultural difference it offered.
Lighting in the rooms was a little dim.

It was like living in a museum. The hotel is decorated so wonderful with antik things, you feel like in the old times. Very nice! The location also was great, right in the middle of Stone Town, close the the sea and walking - distance to the port. Breakfast was on the roof terrace, with nice view to the sea.

A good location and stylish deco.
Dump in the room, very evident in the bathroom. The property also charged two sets of extra payments - for the city, and for the infrastructure- I wasnt really sure if this was legit or just a way to make extra monies

The hotel is very centrally located with lots of shops and a very good coffee shop next to it (Karafuu).
Unfortunately, the hotel was not what we expected. It felt like the rooms had not been fixed in forever, the showers heads, the towels, the bedsheets were all stained, the painting/wall paper was falling off, the rooms were dusty and even the hotel itself was not well kept. We had a bad experience with bed bugs, woke up with lots of bites and when we informed the reception they did not take it very seriously a part from re-cleaning the room nothing else was even suggested to us. The rooftop terrace had a nice view but the breakfast was very mediocre.
